DESCRIPTION: Under general supervision, incumbent will develop a real-time environment for scientific experimentation with future (10-15 years) human-computer interface technologies, including game-like rendering and simulation capabilities and interfaces to prototype input/output hardware and to back-end software for cognitive user state inference, as well as integration with other specialized middleware. Within the created platform, participate in the design and development of scientific experiments and simulation / demonstration applications under supervision of chief scientist under the Cognition and Neuroergonomics grant / research program, and in direct collaboration with researchers at the Swartz Center, the Army Research Laboratory, and other program partners and contractors. Support and improve the workflows in scientific studies integrating prototype brain-machine interface / cognitive user state monitoring systems, motion capture, eye tracking, environmental audio, multi-screen displays and other communication modalities during their design, prototyping, piloting, finalization and execution. Strong interest in neuroscience/cognitive science questions or novel user interfaces technologies.


  • Excellent technical background (Master's degree or higher) and reasoning skills.
  • 3 + years of professional C++ programming experience and demonstrated excellent C++ programming capabilities.
  • 2+ years professional experience in game development, or comparable experience from extensive 3D simulation, virtual reality or similar software development.
  • Extensive experience in 3D programming (rendering, physics), and engine infrastructure development, as well as high-level scripting.
  • Familiarity with all aspects of preparation and planning of human-subject experiements in Psych/Cogsci/HCI/VR, etc. Familiarity with measurement of physiological parameters in scientific experiments.
  • Familiarity with experimentation/stimulus presentation software.
  • Experience in Windows TCP/IP network programming, preferably cross-platform.
  • Experience with all aspects of a modern game content pipelines.
  • Experience in UI/HUD design.
  • Experience with an interpreted language (Java/Python/Shell/Perl) for build, testing and other workflows.
  • Familiarity with software development, version control and issue tracking environments.
