Psycho Boy 3D (beta)
Developer:
Platform:
Windows

Similar to Paper Boy for the Amiga except instead of throwing papers you throw bricks in full 3D.
Includes the old favourites (dogs, cars, unexplained ramps) plus some new obstacles (nuclear power plants, falling trees, bouncy castles, ice, snowmen etc).
UPDATE: 16/Aug/05 Added loads of stuff: Online highscore, eye that shoots lazers, penguins, two ghosts, lava, tombstones & more. Enjoy!
UPDATE: 31/May/05 Added sound effects, reduced font size, added railings on right side of road.
UPDATE: 6/apr/05 Reduced difficulty again.
UPDATE: 20/mar/05 Made the difficulty level a little less brutal. Let me know what you think!
This is currently beta so it's a bit rough around the edges, there's no music or adventure mode yet but that'll come soon. This is also being submitted as my final year project at university. More details can be found on my developer journal.
Game programmed in Dev-C++ and uses OpenGL. Models made in Anim8or. Textures made in MS Paint (yay!) and Gimp. Uses some code from NeHe and some sounds and textures from 3DCafe.
Check back again for the complete version. Enjoy!

AIM: Hitting a house adds 1 to your score, completing a level doubles your score.
AVOID: Holes, dogs, falling trees, thin ice, snipers (avoid the crosshair), cars, hitting nuclear plants, and bricks that have been bounced back to you.
TIP: Dogs can't get past fallen trees, you can't be snipered while in the air, don't throw too many bricks.

I welcome all comments about the game. It's not very polished at the moment, I hope to add music, sound, and an adventure mode (where the levels are loaded from a file, not randomly generated like arcade mode).
I'm submitting this as my final year project for university so I hope no one minds if I reprint some of your comments in the writeup (which is due soon. ack!)

I couldn't get past the first level. Reminds me of Paperboy and is probably just as difficult.

I liked the jumps, thats fun. I liked being able to stop and throw, made it easy to figure how it will hit. It seems to be a little easier some times if you get right next to the houses and throw from there as often as possible. Nuke, Co. houses are funny.
Good luck! Keep it up.

The difficulty curve is pretty steep at the moment, I'm going to balance out the level. At the moment all levels are the same difficulty, they just get longer each time. There's a few tricks to playing that make it easier: brake often, knock down trees (dogs can't get past fallen trees), if you need to destroy a sniper house brake the house before it and throw a brick, and use ramps as much as possible (while in the air you're immune to dogs, cars, and holes).
Thanks for the suggestion with restricting cars to the road, good idea.

To the people playing: I discovered that after level three if you just focus on surviving instead of hitting houses, you last longer and since your score doubles with each level you get more points.

When its finished I'll include the source with it. It's still a bit messy at the moment. [wink]
Good point, you are constrained by an invisible barrier. I've added in some railings along the side to make it clearer.
Shh!
I've been working on it slowly since september 04 but most of the work was done between february and march. It's the first game I've made with C++ and OpenGL so it took me some time learning that. I'm still working on it now, but not as often (get ready for online highscores [smile]).

The snowmen are just obstacles really, they also block bricks and can be used to stop dogs. Originally the game was going to have three stages: normal stage, ice stage and halloween stage. But I haven't designed the levels yet so its all just randomly generated.

Keep up the good work!
PS: Is there anyway that you can remove the cheaters from the highscore board?
