Michael Abrash's classic Graphics Programming Black Book is a compilation of Michael's previous writings on assembly language and graphics programming (including from his "Graphics Programming" column in Dr. Dobb's Journal). Much of the focus of this book is on profiling and code testing, as well as performance optimization. It also explores much of the technology behind the Doom and Quake 3-D games, and 3-D graphics problems such as texture mapping, hidden surface removal, and the like. Thanks to Michael for making this book available.

The full text of the book is available here in PDF format. Due to the book's length, we've made each chapter available separately. The files are large, so we don't recommend reading them online. We suggest downloading them first (right-click on the link). You may want to start by downloading the Cover, Table of Contents, Introduction, Part 1 Opening Page, and Part 2 Opening Page. Then download any chapters you want.

So Mode-X rings a bell, those good ol times.its nice but very dated. I got old books who mention this mode. It.s more for advanced engine programmers gettingnthe most out off the limited hardware under dos. In the past.
Might be a big part is still useable in modern times.

Well I'am just starting. Slowly. I wonder if ASM is still done does any dev use it it critical section of modern engines.
Also guess C is more exception.
I geuss for me it could be confusing and to advance.

Well as I look into the future and just starting to learn so I expect in a few years i might get something simple done. As mainstream hardware shift to newer stuff and dev current API get much more common. I now focus on latest API DX11 in my case.
And C++11 .

Also with common modern hardware the surplus computing power and very huge limits barrieres. some is sacrifice for ease of development.

Well the first time i came in touch wich coding was 20 years ago. Machine code for a Z80 wenn I was a student.
