D3DX MATRICES

Hi Im learning D3D 8 and I am having alot of trouble learning how to manipulate martices etc. I coded a cube into a vertex buffer and I am trying to translate,rotate,scale etc. I cant seem to figure out how to represent the (cube) as a matrix.If anyone can tell me how I could do something like this(example) or if someone knows of any tutorials that would really help me. Most tutorials online that are for beginners always talk about initializing direct3d. I am also using common sdk files for my project. Thankz in advance
