I would like to write a game including my own game engine, but im finding it just too tough! Should I beat myself up that I will use somebodys engine?

No, using someone else''s engine is not cheating. I''d be far more impressed with someone who finished a game with a 3rd party engine than someone who made a bug-ridden, unfinished game with his own engine.
Even using another engine, there''ll still be plenty of code to write.

John is correct,
finishing a game is the hardest step.
i have a lot of respect for ppl that actually finish a product (even if they used someone elses engine)
