wow guys its not that hard, the x for the add is in one of two places. After clickin it so many times i automatically do it within like half a second. I don''t really notice it anymore.

Personally I would pay to view this site... or perhaps I should say I WOULD HAVE paid, because I''ve noticed content drying up a little. Obviously contributions aren''t at your control, but if you start charging for the site like many people want would it get better? The forum is great IF you have questions (God knows I''ve asked my share), but for really expanding your knowledge nothing beats an interesting article that teaches you something, that''s why I drop by anyway. The user base would probably drop if you charged, and I don''t think that would help get you any more articles.

I don''t mind the ads. Popups everywhere, popunders, popups on exit... THAT''S annoying. This? Bah. Kudos to ATI for buying something that isn''t intrusive or annoying, and helping support the site, and to everyone at gamedev.net doing a great site that I don''t pay anything to read.

I have a real problem with advertising, mostly because it is triply wasteful:
It wastes my time, watching goo on the screen in this case (well, it doesn''t any more). I have better things to do with my time. It also wastes my (university''s) perfectly good bandwidth.
It wastes the resources of advertising people, creating these monstrosities. They could be doing better things like running gamedev servers for instance (or, indeed, picking their noses).
It wastes the resources of good people working for ATI, producing hardware for people who might not really want it after all (but were compelled to buy it after seeing the advert - okay, an exaggeration, but still).

On the subject of content.....yeah it does seem that articles and such are coming in a little slower. As soon as I can find time to finish my particle engine article and clean up the associated source and editor, you have it.

Even though some ppl said it makes ATI look bad, I think the opposite. Recently I've been looking into buying a new vcard n this december or whnever the new cards come out by nvidia i was going to buy a gforce2 but after seeing those ads it's made me reconsider back and forth between the two. Either way, it made me aware of the fact the ATI makes cards 2 (you can see i didn't do 2 much research yet sinse i dind't already know that).
Maybe the same thing will happen to others or future others. And finally, just click the x if you don't like it. it's only there for a second and it's better than having to pay money. paying money would definitly discourage new members from joining gamedev.net. that's my thoughts.

I agree with AP above...this stunt only drives more nails into the uber-marketing team that is ATI.

It could be worse...There could be SOUND in the ad! Nothing annoys me more than having some stupid flash ad pop up with some annoying, ultra-low quality sound effect playing. This is mainly due to the fact that my computer is constantly running winamp and is connected to my stereo system, which occaisionaly finds itself at very high decibel levels.
As long as GameDev leaves sound out of the ads, I''ll survive.

If I were a member of the GDNEt staff I would get back to ATI on the complaints issue about the ad. Since now you have proof of your point on how disliked it is. Maybe they would see things differently then. If not then it is not listening to the flood of complaints given to you. I have full understanding for the need of money for a site like this and I am not asking you to remove the ad, I am asking you to ask ATI to at least change it.

I think Eurogamer are doing this sponsorship thing the right way, basically they re-skin the site every now and then, with their sponsors theme, the design is usually good so it''s not intrusive nor time wasting in the way a layered Flash banner is and their sponsor gets very good exposure.

the amount of complaints coming in isn''t even a dent on the hits that come to GDNet probably. Everyone saying this is such a horrible thing is a minority. And why boycott ATI just for taking advantage of one of the newest internet advertising technologys. Commercials are everywhere. If there is a way found to put a commercial somewhere.. its going there. We can''t do anything about it, so accept it. ATI still makes an awesome product (blows the market AWAY) so why boycott it just based on the fact you don''t like to hear about it?

I don''t think you have to shut down access for non-members. All you need to do is to put some sort of symbol next to the names of members. This will make them feel ELITE, and they will gladly pay.
