Zen of Direct3D?

I''m currently reading The Zen of Direct3D Game Programming. The author has instructed to lock the back buffer and draw to it, but I read somewhere that you shouldn''t do that. What, then, is the correct way to render? I''m not asking for a whole tutorial, just how I should recode that part of the render() function.
