Designing a game. How much and what level of detail?

My next project is going to be my first trial with Windows and DirectX. Its going to be a remake of my previous DOS based game. You can download it from www.geocities.com/momogames/DELTACTF.zip My problem comes in the design stage. In the DOS version, I put a good deal of planning into the actual code, the interactions between objects, the code layout, etc. In retrospect, it wasn''t enough. I''ll definetly need even MORE planning in this next version. Not only will I be working with structs and classes, but I''ll be adding many new features such as levels, items and powerups, bitmapped objects, and I plan to leave the code open for multiplayer, should I decide to put it in. The AI itself will require more pages of planning than this DOS game did. I''m allready deciding how to manage my data and organize the code. But how much detail do I put into the design doc? What do I need to specify, and how should I go about planning the game? Any help or comments would be appreciated.

I can''t view it. Its for members only...

And I don''t want to sign up.
While I understand not signing up for things (like I avoid signing up for the New York Times just to avoid having my name/email address in some database), I signed up for Gamasutra without concern for some reason.
I guess because I used to go there before they went to subscription, so I didn''t have any qualms, and I am used to game industry things, like the IGDA (which I am a paying member of *pride*) and Gamedev.net''s mailing list.

Perhaps you might be able to use Google to find a cached entry? Or the way back machine (forgot the url) might help as well.
And if all else fails, you can always sign up...

I think this still works... but no promise... :-)

You can go to the URL, and then the java code on the page sends you to another page, but then you´ll already have the page in your (web browser)cache, find the right file (search on the headline or something like that), open it in an editor, remove all &#106avascripts, save it, and open it in the webbrowser...

After doing it twice, you will get bored and register... ;-)
