List of "all" the opensource engines :)

Could people post over here all opensource engines that you know? I mean EVERY opensource engine, no matter what genre/style. For an example, all the text-based-adventure-engines are welcome, as well as Point-And-Click engines. I would be REALLY interested about RTS-engines. I have seen couple of C&C and Warcraft II- stylish engines before SOMEWHERE, but now I cannot find those :.( So, all opensource engines are welcome. Pure Graphic-libraries are not welcome (there are tons of those... Allegro, DX, OpenGL, and all the small ones). Well, my .02$ : www.scramm.org -> Oldschool Lucasarts adventure engine. Still inside beta, but should be released this year with features including lots of editors, and ready made functions and path-finding routines... should be cool

Errr, well, there''s always ClanLib. Oh yeah, by the way, I''m pretty sure Allegro isn''t JUST a graphics lib, and I know for sure that DX includes DirectDraw, DirectSound, etc, so it''s not JUST graphics.

If you code it, they will come...

I''m sorry... maybe I didn''t express myself enough. With "simply graphic engine" I meant that I don''t want that much API''s, but more like construction kits, and opensource engines that are providing tools/code (atleast to begin with) for some genre... It would be really nice to find C&C-style sourcecode from somewhere... and DARN! I did find one site with both, Warcraft II and C&C stylish engines, but I cannot find it anymore

Personally I love Allegro, except that there is one big problem for me... Fonts. Allegro doesn''t support windows fonts, and the tools provided are pretty confusing... and not to even mention that I should draw fonts by myself, and then map those fonts for file... yieks!

I found these today:

http://ire.netpedia.net/ --> Pretty cool looking Ultima 6 engine for Windows, Linux and BeOS. Looks nice, and has one of the best documentations I have even seen for engines.

http://java.indy3d.net/ --> Adventure Game developing engine, written with Java. Needs only Java 1.1 version browser (or whatever program that can be used as plugin, I think...), and OH GOD! THIS LOOKS QUALITY :D
Check it out! Worth of look atleast while Scramm isn't released for public!!! DROP A MESSAGE TO CREATOR!
Includes small game demo "Indiana Jones & Network Of Doom", and probably the best thing on webpage is the background music (Indiana Jones theme . Absolutely great tutorials/manual. Only problem is that the java isn't that fast... atleast without optimizing, and that really shows on the demo game.

http://members.xoom.com/dosuser/ac.htm --> Another adventure game engine. Looks nice. Mainly created for DOS, but should work also with windows. Under developement (lats update last month?). Nice variety of features (mod plugs and so on).

Also found:
http://www.mixnmojo.com/robot/ (again, adventure engine)

http://www.mixnmojo.com/sciencefact/index.shtml (Really impressive looking adventure game engine... but you have to pay if you are doing shareware/commercial game. Freeware is free)

http://www.worldfoundry.org (BIG, probably the most biggest adventure engine I found. COMPELETLY FREEWARE! Linux version is on alphastage, but anyway... looks the best of the selection. Check it out!)

One reason why I'm looking these engines is to give newbie "wanna-be-programmers" a change to try to create a game, and other reason is that I might want to create some little project with some "make something in 5sec" library

It would be a good idea to centralize all the urls. Will Illusion provide some hard disk space for this purpose ?

Also, I believe you should consider putting Hypercard-like environments :

  • Macbird http://macbird.userland.com/
  • Metacard http://www.metacard.com
  • ...

(Oups, my mistake : Metacard is not opensource)
Be reading you,
David

There are much more half-finished engine projects and/or finished "genre-engines", that are good base for creating game quick if you don''t want to put too much effort for creating the core...
It would be kind of nice to have link list of all these urls!

Again, for an example when I''m talking about genre-engine, I found a message from... WhiteLion ? I think it was WhiteLion... anyways, he is working on a Pirates! stylish game, and has 2D-engine up. Well, I have been dreaming about creating Elite in 2D-version with mixture of Starcontrol 2 stylish gameworld, but I''m too lazy. Anyways, I asked from WhiteLion if he would be interested about this kind of project, because he already has engine that could be used for this Elite-stylish game, and so it would be much faster to create this project if all the functions are ready... You just need to program the features that differ from games!
(and of course much more... you always have to change atleast 50% of the code ;-)

Same thing with Warcraft-stylish "half-finished" engine, that some guy had created for fun, and it included most of the important things like pathfinding and stuff, but it lacked with some of the features, like Gold-mining and things, and finally creator of this engine got bored for the idea and left source codes on his webpage if someone would like to continue working on it... And this could be nice base to continue building game.

Still, I''m more interested about this kind of Game Developement Kits (GDK) which can be used to create small games in five minutes, but can be also used to create commercial-stylish games...
