Secondary Transformations

Hi, I am trying to do real time mesh deformations (such as moving legs when walking) in my game without using bezier stuff. So, is there any hardware accelerated way to do this (assume lastest technology), or do most people have to do such transformations in software and then do the main transformations in hardware ? Thanks
