I''m planning to write a professional game with a friend of mine. We''re still planning. To finish a good game will take about a year orso, so I had a backup idea: Why not do two jobs at the same time? For example making Internet sites, just for the money - it''s simple (so your mind can be on your game) - you get money, and will still survive - even if the game flops (happens to the best) Is this a smart thing to do?

Oke oke the above is almost a retorical question.
I already read a lot about starting a new game project, but is an investment of ~$100.000 the only way to start?

Is there anyone who tried this himself?
Especially interrested in the first year!
If it flopped, I''m even more interrested! (thank god for anonymous posting here...)

Hey,

I think you should definately develop a game aimed at the budgetware area first ($20 range). I think its a good start to know you can accompolish it and it also provides money while you work on real projects..
Im currently planning for this.
As for the web design, good way to earn needed money.

There are so many web designers out there already (most of them hacks, unfortunately), that setting up a profitable business in that may end up being a bigger task than you are planning right now.

2nd, you can certainly make a professional game with a very low investment. I''m making a very professional 2D game in which the only $ I spent was for a compiler (which is not even neccessary, you could use Allegro) and about $500 worth of art software. The important thing is to have the talent, know-how, and a good game idea.

I second that motion Alex. As long as you''re not looking for eyecandy like the FF8 intro, you should be fine budgetwise.
2 costs that will apply though a) programs and b) a lawyer if you are using a special type of contract/NDA.

Does anyone have more of this official stuff?
I''m really interrested, and I''d be real thankfull!

(ps: doesn''t need to be directly useable. I''m just comparing and learning what I''m dealing with here...)
