I was thinking about buying the new vertion of lightwave, and I wanted to know what other 3D modelers and artists think about lightwave abd how it stands up to some of the other programs out there. Also I have a Mac and I was woundering if anyone here knows what the best 3D modelers are for the mac. I''m using RayDream Studio now and I wanted to go up to a better program, so thanks. -fillbert

I own Lightwave and I love it. It is as capable as any modeling and animation package on the market. Best of all, in your case, it is available on the Mac.

To get an idea of Lightwave''s capabilities just watch Star Trek Voyager or Deep Space 9. A majority of the effects on those shows were done with Lightwave. You can also check out www.405themovie.com. 405 the movie is a funny short film you can watch and most of the effects were done with Lightwave. The whole thing took just three months of spare time to produce.

I hope this helps.
I am a prety staunch anty-Lightwave artist manily because i come from the TrueSpace, MAX view of 3D modeling and LW has a ver different concept behind it. Obviously skilled people can do amazing things with it. But it''s hard to cross to if you start in anythig else.

But if you must use a Mac, I supose it''s as good as you''ll get.

I recently bought L6 after using L5.5 for the last two years. It''s definately worth the extra money. L6 just has so much more critical functionality, like UV maps, vert weighting etc. that there''s little point in sticking with L5 anymore. The implimentation of some of the new stuff is a bit ''early'' but it''s roughness contains a lot of power and flexability.

For the Mac L6 is probably the most flexable tool you''ll find. Electric Image has a nice renderer still, but the new HDR imaging 168 bit pipeline in Lightwave can perform some real wonders.

..as far as Lightwave vs. Truespace.. Well, I learned on TS and made the shift fine. Maybe you should try it again? To be honest not many professionals in this industry take Truespace as a ''serious'' tool.. It''s kindof one of those resume killer apps like Bryce. Even Hash lends more credibility. Still, it''s the quality of the art that counts, everything else is just a tool to get there..

If you have the money...I would wait a while and buy Maya 3 for OSX. Its not coming out until around Christmas...but definately worth it...(I cant stand Lightwave). but until Maya comes out...Lightwave is the best you can get for a mac.

Well Fillbert, I own a PC. And I don''t have to defend it. :-)
