I am trying to save a bmp in photoshop 7 with RLE info... but it doesn''t give me the option to do so... how can i do this? I see the check box, but it is grayed out..
what am i doing wrong? its a 24bit bmp

I think you''ll have to use the indexed color mode. So, no 24-bit there.
Image \ Mode \ Indexed and click Ok, the default settings should be fine. Then you can save the pic to .rle. Don''t know Why you''d want to use it though...

RLE could actually slow down blitting, since it''s necessary for the system to "run through" the bitmap and decode it prior to blitting. it''ll depend upon the driver implementation as to whether this will be faster than blitting an un-compressed bitmap.
going to 256 color mode may also be slower, if the bitmap is kept as a DIB in memory, since a 256-to-current DC mode conversion would be required prior to blitting. it depends on how you''re loading the bitmap. if you''re using LoadImage (w/o the LR_CREATEDIBSECTION flag) then how the bitmap''s stored on file is of no consequence during blitting as the default LoadImage code path will convert the bitmap to a DDB bitmap compatible with the current display mode.
