There's been no updates from anyone in about a month, so I imagine this thread was soon to once more be "necroed". I won't be bumping forever, so if it ever does close and you need to post a link, remember that you can always PM or E-mail me, and I'll do an update.

Inkscape - Open Source Scalable Vector Graphics Editor
http://www.inkscape.org/
SVG drawings are rarely used in games, but Inkscape can be very useful to artistically challenged people who try to make sprites, backgrounds, etc. because one can edit and tweak endlessly and export an antialiased image of any size; maintaining variants (e.g. a car in many colours) is also easy.

Plastic Animation Paper should definitely be on that list. Synfig, too.
They are respectively shareware and open source and they should go into the animation section.

Is there another animation section in gamedev?

Sorry, I meant the list in this thread; I forgot that it is sorted by price and not by software type.

Sharpconstruct, the ZBrush of the poor people! :)
No, really, it is very good, easy, and free (as in beer and as in everything).
I think it is very well headed, it will need a little time for improvement, tough. Just check it: http://sharp3d.sourc...x.php/Main_Page

It might be too specific but the Facegen Modeller provides very realistic results and is modestly priced at $100. And as a rare treat its easy to use right from the start. http://www.facegen.com/

I think Tiled (http://www.mapeditor.org/) could be added to the Tile & Sprite software list!
