I was wondering what is the best way to send data over a few kilometers between a phone (proabably using gprs) and a laptop maybe using a GPRS modem in the laptop as it will be used in the field. (ie not connected by any wires to the internet. Anybody and ideas about how this can be done if it is possible to do even.

No wi-fi is not an option!

I have got some info on some solutions!

I could get the laptop user to start the app on the laptop and enter the phones number. The laptop application will then send by sms its ip address to the phone. The phone application will then open a connection to the ip address then start submitting the data.

Or the laptop runs as a webserver and phone opens up a connection to it!

Any ideas anybody?
Hi!

You could communicate using a normal webserver - some free hosts support php, therefor you can make a simple protocol for communication.

Phone sends data packets to webserver, webserver caches them and laptop can retrieve these packets.
