Hosting my site?

Just thought I'd mention that the urls for the sites hosted on GameDev.net are much longer than say, Tripod. Perhaps even Geocities.

My hosted site's url is: http://www.gamedev.net/columns/features/diariesandsites/jharler/default.html

Tell me that's not a pain in the butt to type out! :O

Oh... and if anyone's wondering, I do plan on updating once I get a chance!

That's changing in the future. Hosted sites added from here on out will have a much shorter url.

When John gets a minute, he'll probably switch the currently hosted sites as well.

That's good to hear! I'm getting tired of typing that out for people so they can get to my site.

I also noticed that Druid lucked out and got a short url! (it's www.gamedev.net/opengl for those who don't know).

FreeServers doesn't do that much advertising, they only puts up one banner, and if you use frames, then it's in a frame across the top of the page. They also will let you run commercial banners. Plus you can get a .8m domain like mine inverse.8m.com which r nice and short.

I host sites with subdomains (http://yoursite.neorift.net) but the staff and I vote on it first... if you're interested put your site up somewhere and post the URL, I'll take a look at it.

Well, let us know what you're going to do on your site, and give us at least a basic framework of how it will look. It doesn't have to be fleshed out completely, and you can do that in 2 megs or less. Once you get this fixed up, fire an email off to kevin@gamedev.net and dave@gamedev.net, and we can go from there. We're waiting. ;-)

Admin for GameDev.net.

I'd like to get my site hosted by game dev. So what do I do? I haven't finished the HTML however, because I've been looking for a host. FreeServers has way too much advertising, and AOL only gives you 2 megs. GeoCities has long URLs and irritating banners.

The site is about a game engine I'm working on, called Fooge (Freeware Object-Oriented Game Engine). I've been working on it since May 20th, so this isn't the kind of thing I'm likely to not follow through with.

Well, I'm now hosted by Crosswinds, which is definitely the best of all the free website-hosting services. A real e-mail account (no forwarding), unlimited space, and no advertising at all are the perks. Plus Dave says he's trying to encourage only well-established sites from now on.
