I am an experienced programmer using oop in c++, but have yet to try game programming. I really want to start serious game programming. Can anyone give me suggestions as to the steps I should take. I believe I have all of the math and programming skills required, just lack of experience and guidance.

Windows Game Programming for Dummies by Andre LaMothe is a great book.

Andre's newest book is pretty good too - Tips of the Windows Game Programming Gurus I think is the title. There's also Real Time Strategy Game Programming by Mickey Kawick. You'll need a copy of the DirectX7 SDK also, which you can still download from Microsoft's web site or order the CD from them.

Tips of the Windows Game Programming Gurus.

This book comes with the DirectX SDK although I'm not quite sure what the version number is.
