Money to be made on cell phone games?
Hello,
I see lots of sites these days selling simple games for cell phones and I was wondering if maybe I could make some money as well. Are there sites that will by a game from me if I make a decent one? Also, how is it done? Are there free development environments available or would I have to buy some expensive SDK? Thanks,
Erik Sintorn
You can develop for most mobile phones without any cost to you, there are freely available SDKs for J2ME, Symbian, Mophun and others. J2ME is available from Sun's website, Symbian from Nokia's site and Mophun from their website.
As for making money, the market is saturated with games and it will be hard for you to make any money unless:
1) you've got a popular license,
2) you've got an untapped genre (unlikely, but there may be some), or
3) you've got the best implementation by far.
The other thing to remember is that it's quite difficult to get hold of actual units sold as the distribution can have a few layers in it: publishers -> content aggregators -> network operators.

I think the general opinion has been that most games for phones don't make much money, but also that one of the main reasons is that most games for phones are really naff :o)
If you can make a good one, you go for it!
