Gamedev.net performance behind firewall.

No, Rob. You're the only one.

Come on guys - I can't be the only one that gets a 20 second pause between screens in gamedev.net. This is on a BDP (Big-damn-pipe).

We've talked to the good folks at FGN/Cybereps (it's not under our direct control), and they refuse to even consider it. We'll keep trying.
There are settings in your browser that have to be set with respect to the Proxy server stuff.

Tell your IT guy what is happening.

IE = Tools / Internet Options / Connections / Lan Settings

Thanks for looking into it.

It's just a shame that I don't get the ads, and get a massive slowdown. If you guys get paid for it, I'd like to see them. Wish I had power over the firewall but security is a big issue where I am so the firewall won't be opened up any more.

Thanks again. I'd rather have the slowdown and gamedev then not have gamedev at all.

The problem is not proxy related - as there is no proxy. The problem arises when the ad software directs my browser to connect on port 8880. This port is masked by my firewall thus the connection never completes (causing the delay). There's no proxy to connect through.

This is all a side effect of being inside a financial institution during the day. Big castrated pipe. Kinda like being at the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit photo sessions without Viagra (tm).

I'm not behind any sort of firewall or anything (cable modem at home), and ads.cybereps.com:8880 or yoda.cybereps.com:8880 occasionally cause big slowdowns. The page itself loads almost instantly (cable modem ) but it waits and waits for the damn cybereps.com response.

Guess it's intolerant of firewalls AND it's slow

The pages load up for me, but the ads don't period. Usually not even a time-out, they just can't be connected to. It kinda sucks in IE 5, because it immediately switches to the damn error page and I can't see the gamedev page anymore. Sometimes it does this, sometimes it doesn't.

Well, I love Gamedev.net but have a problem when I'm behind the firewall. All of the references to as0.cybereps.com:8880 hang my machine up for about 20 seconds on any page read. Obviously this is a bit of a hinderance to getting around the site. Am I correct in assuming that these are advertisements I'm missing?

Is there any way to move them to a sane port that can get through a resonably restrictive firewall?

Tonight's pretty bad too. I'm on the worlds slowest phone line (thanks USWest) - they put me on a multiplexor so I only get 26k-28k no matter what (even with a 53k). I can't get DSL for the same reason and TCI/ATT works on my cable once a week for an hour to get me digital cable when all I want is a cable modem...

But that wouldn't help tonight. Advertisment performance is > 9 seconds from "Contacting" to moving on. This is really bad. The one thing that I expected to speed up the net more than porn was advertsing.
