I've got a Creative Nomad Zen Xtra, and the headphone jack stinks. It's a known problem that eventually the left channel dies, which is what happened with mine. I'm no electronics expert, so but I've tried to follow this guide, without much success. Here are some comparisons between the guide author's job, and mine. Considering that his left channel works and mine doesn't, I'm stumped.

Ah. So you had one of the dodgy batch too! Why didn't you RMA it? Creative were really cool about mine, and now I've got one of the fixed batch with a much stronger jack...

The fact that you're using a longer piece of something (doesn't look like copper to me) and this guy is using a short thing of copper tips me off. While I have no clue why that would cause it to not work at all, it's something to consider.
