Game Engines (which to choose)

I am wondering what the esteemed people of gamedev have to say on the latest (or old) game engines. Which one is best? What makes it the best? Best free engine or best commercial engine, 2D or 3D it doesn't matter. Any related comments would be helpful...

It all depends on what you need the engine for. Each has its own strong and weak points. Trying to compare them would give nothing more than incomplete results.
my site www.fablefox.com has an article on this.

but just like what monkey said, depend on what you need it for. this is where 'fail to plan = plan to fail' come. if yo decided to go multiplatform, don't choose engine that is dependant too much on DX. etc.. etc..portal, blah.blah.

just read the article. the english might be bad, i wrote it after receiving a BAD news on two of my engines.

I have no clue why seemingly simple requests for information/feedback gets shot down. Why do I even try? Oh, thats right I needed some info/feedback on game engines from the community. Lets try this again...(even though I would like to go on a severe rant right now on why getting quality, USEFUL info on here is so damned difficult sometimes. I will assume its me and the horrible way I word my queries)

Which engine do you use/like and why?

Lol, dude, calm down [smile] I didn't mean my post to be offensive or to look down at you. Sorry if you took it that way - i just stated my opinion on the matter.
Heh, sorry MiB. Its all good...

Seriously though I would like to get feedback on game engines for game design. Prefer 3D (no way huh?). Free'r the better ;) I have checked out a few. And course played around with a few. I am not a big scripter/programmer. I can usually find and change code when I have to. Editor friendly I guess. Any recommendations?

<Advertisement>My engine is strictly in development, and i aim to make it easy to make new games (using xml), and it has a strong event subsystem so you can handle large projects (even can 'include' other xml area definitions). My (incomplete) website can be found here</Advertisement>

Anyway if youre making a list of these, ill contact you when its done and you can add it to the list.
