As many of you have noticed, the FAQ for the Mobile and Consoles forum is a bit spare right now.

Ideally, the FAQ would consist of a honkin' truckload of links to individually picked sites that people have found useful for development on these "alternative" platforms. So I'm asking y'all: What sites do you use on a regular basis, and what sites have you found indispensible in the past? Post your suggestions here.

I'm just starting to get into Dreamcast Development, so I may as well toss you the links.

DCEmulation - All sorts of information usable to homebrw developers - Looks a bit outdated now

DevCast @ DCEmulation - Information about hombrew dev and the DC Hardware

DC Homebrew - A site dedicated to Homebrew DC Development, has links to free games, demos and other goodies

Official KallistOS Homepage - Anyone serious about DC development should be using KOS - it allows you to control many aspects of the DC hardware from a higher level (note: There was also a forked GBA port too). If you want KOS, get the CVS version from the SF page as it's newer than the packaged versions.

And finally - BOOB - The ultimate DC homebrew dev site. Contains tools, docs, information, demos, etc. Still very active =)

I'll send you more when I find them.

Getting the #&*^$! MMAPI to actually work, even though there's nothing wrong with how you had it before, or any of the other hundred variations you tried, for that matter. (Although once you get it working from the sample, you will probably want to try rearranging it into the tightest form you can get without breaking it. :/ )

http://ant.apache.org - simply the best way to "make" your Java applications.

http://antenna.sf.net - Antenna, great collection of Ant tasks for J2ME development. Saves you a crapload of work, and even provides a simple source code preprocessor to allow conditional compiles. Very nice if you only want to automate your tasks, but prefer to rely on your own UI classes.

J2ME Polish - similar to Antenna, but more complete and including a host of useful classes, including a configurable UI system, for which you either need a commercial license or have to release your software under the terms of the GPL.

Thanks, guys, these look great so far. Looks like there's an emphasis on cellphones so far, which I was expecting.... any other indie console developers wanna weigh in?

It's probably worth putting a link to the XGameStation in there. I know at leats one person on these forums who's actively involved in it, I'm sure that the number will only increase.

More DreamCast links:

DCEvolution - Still buzzing with activity

Serial Slave - Transfer data / programs from your PC to the DC using a serial cable

There's also the two GDNet articles by Kevin Fowlks - Making Games for the DreamCast Using Standard GNU Tools - Part 1 and Part 2. A sadly unfinished intro series to DC development.

Edit: SDL for Dreamcast

AndrewK posted this thread with links to GNU Tolls for the GameCube.

My friend's also working on GC homebrew stuff so I'll try and get him to contribute to this thread (he's always good for links!) =)

For an indi: no.
For a dedicated J2ME game dev comp: yes.

The biggest problem in J2ME is the large amount of (usually very different) devices. Each and everyone of them has "features" that need special care.
Just getting your hands on the devices is impossible for an indi and thus will limit your market.
