Well, I was able to get some decent partially used hardware at rock-bottom prices for a second computer. I want to set up a "practice" machine for things not windows. I want to use it to kick-start my lack of networking experience as well. Since my school computer labs all use UNIX and since many/most of the game servers out there are UNIX or UNIX-like (correct me if I'm wrong), I was thinking of installing freeBSD or the like in order to have a UNIX networking practice machine. Am I misguided? Is this a good idea or a bad one? What do people recommend?

I recommend getting one of the mainstream Linux installations, and I recommend heading over to the All Things UNIX forum for further questions.

Get something common like Fedora Core, or Debian. Everyone has their own favorite, but just keep it simple: get one where you know how to find help.
enum Bool { True, False, FileNotFound };
