Is anyone using Java3D in current game development?
I''ve decided to use Java3D to prototype a 3D game idea I have, but I''m wondering if it may even to powerful enough to go beyond prototyping. It implements DirectX or OpenGL and Sun swears that they are committed to making it a decent performer.
Any thoughts in general about Java3D?
Sorry, I think I phrased my original question poorly. When I said, “swears that they are committed to making it a decent performer” I implying that I know the current state of Java3D. Currently it is slow and can not compare with many of the other 3D engines. What I’m more curious about is the future of Java3D. I’ve done some digging on the future of Java3D and I’ve heard nothing except for the fact that ‘Sun is committed.’ What does this mean? Does anyone have a little inside info? How does Sun plan to overcome some of the shortcomings of Java3D.
Most importantly, how many game developers take stock in what Sun is claiming? Does anyone really believe that Sun will overcome the issues with Java3D as promised, and turn it into a decent 3D engine for large games?
