Smallest and largest denominations of the coins in the poem, but back when he was writing 50 cent and dollar pieces were a lot more common.

The distinction I was seeing was more that "no eagle" is bracketed by "eagle" denominations. Do you think the existence of pennies and half dollars is significant?
According to the wikipedia entry for nickel, it appears that it's never featured the image of an eagle: Shield, Liberty Head, Indian Head and the Jefferson profile. However, the dime has.
