Q: Properly displaying odd sized icons with Windows API

I'm currently using Delphi 2 to create a front end for an Ai I'm developing, however I cannot get windows to reconize 48x48 icons or 16x16 icons, they always get stretched to 32x32. Is there anyway to modifiy this or do I waste time to make a whole new set of commands to load and display icons in their proper sizes.

Are these icons going to be displayed on the Windows desktop, or in a windows UI frame? Or are these supposed to be drawing inside one of your windows you can paint to?
