I'll second that. DirectX is very easy to use with Visual C++.

Ok, what is the difference between the standard and the professional / enterprise edition?

In the standard version, you don't have code optimisation, the debugger and many useful tools.

If the piggy bank is a little small, i would recommend WATCOM. I'm working with it and it's easy to write DX progs with it, too.
Well, but the IDE really s***s.

Didn't they stop developing Watcom ? I heard 11.0 would have been the last version.

Yep, that's right, so if you don't want to pay for it, you can wait, 'cause it *might* be free in the future.
As I said, it's still a good compiler (at the moment).

I did never say it isn't a good compiler, but Watcom's time is over, so I'd say better get VC++. I'm gonna look at Watcom if they release it for free.

I can't think of a reason he'd possibly need the Enterprise edition of VC (and have to pay the BIG bucks for it). Professional edition is really all anyone needs. It can be had around here for about $45 at the local computer show. Check http://www.marketpro.com to see if they have them anywhere near you.

I can think of one reason (the only difference in fact):

Sourcesafe!

Even when working on your own, sourcesafe is an invaluable tool for version control. (And its great for localizing those re-appearing bugs you were sure you already fixed )...
