When I try to run my program on a target computer, the following chunk crashes:

SAFE_RELEASE( pD3D ); //We're done with the object

	//Setup the camera
	D3DXMATRIX matProj,matView;
	//2D App - Use Ortho projection
	D3DXMatrixOrthoLH(&matProj, (float)m_setup->width, (float)m_setup->height, 1.0f, 500.0f);
    m_d3dDevice->SetTransform(D3DTS_PROJECTION, &matProj);
	D3DXMatrixLookAtLH(&matView, &D3DXVECTOR3((float)m_setup->width/2, (float)m_setup->height/2, -450.0f),//Camera Position
								 &D3DXVECTOR3((float)m_setup->width/2, (float)m_setup->height/2, 0.0f),//Look At Position
                                 &D3DXVECTOR3(0.0f, 1.0f, 0.0f));	   //Up Direction
	m_d3dDevice->SetTransform(D3DTS_VIEW, &matView);

	//Set render states
	m_d3dDevice->SetRenderState( D3DRS_ALPHATESTENABLE, true);
	m_d3dDevice->SetRenderState( D3DRS_ALPHAREF, 0x02 );
	m_d3dDevice->SetRenderState( D3DRS_ALPHAFUNC, D3DCMP_GREATEREQUAL );
	m_d3dDevice->SetRenderState( D3DRS_CULLMODE, D3DCULL_NONE);
	m_d3dDevice->SetRenderState( D3DRS_LIGHTING, FALSE );
    m_d3dDevice->SetRenderState( D3DRS_ZENABLE, TRUE );

	//Set sampler states
	m_d3dDevice->SetSamplerState( 0, D3DSAMP_MINFILTER, D3DTEXF_LINEAR );
    m_d3dDevice->SetSamplerState( 0, D3DSAMP_MAGFILTER, D3DTEXF_LINEAR );

Now, I thought maybe directx on the target machines is outdated, but dxdiag says version 9.0c. Here's the whole dump:

I had to copy d3dx9_30.dll from my development machine to even start the program. This is probably really significant, but I don't know what's going on. Now, if there is somehow some version conflict between directx 9.0c on my development machine and directx9.0c on the target machines, how do I build my program with an earlier version of directx (updating directx on the target machines is not an option) Thank you, in advance, so much! How does it crash? Can you get some sort of error information, like an exceptio code or a memory address? What makes you think it's that chunk of code that's causing the problem?

Are you checking all of your return values for important functions (I.e. ones that return an interface or fill in a struct whose members you then use)?

Recent D3DX versions are in a DLL. The correct (and only legal) way to redistribute them is to get the end user to run the DirectX redist package (Which comes with the SDK I belive, or you can download it). If you're just copying it between two of your own machines it should be (legally) fine, but I'd still recommend running the redist package to make sure it's installed properly.
It crashes with the standard "Apache.exe has encountered a problem and needs to cles. We are sorry for the inconvenience. [Debug][Send Error Report][Don't Send]"

Exception code 0xc0000005 at address 0x0000000000401e0e

I know the code crashes here because I created a build with a million MessageBox() functions. The chain stopped reporting at the beginning of this block, and never made it to the one after.

I will do redist from now on future projects. Thanks for the pointer. No one wants to mess with Microsoft's lawyers. Either way, I can't change things on these target computers. If there is a version problem, I will have to build my project with an earlier version of DirectX. How do I do that on Visual C++ 2005 Express? (If that's even the problem?)

P.S. Do you know how to interpret those error reports? If so, how?

Exception code 0xc0000005 is an access violation. Can you tell if it's reading or writing, and what address? 0x00401e0e is in your application, that's the code that was running when it crashed (You can use the debugger on your machine to find what line of code that is, probably). If it's reading an address near 0x00000000, then it's probably a null pointer, near 0xfeeefeee is "deleted COM object", and there's a few other "special" values.

I'd got for logging to a file (make sure you flush the file after every write), but whatever [smile]

That's probably not the problem (There's over 30 versions of the D3DX DLL to avoid exactly this problem), but you'd need to install an older SDK on your dev machine, and use that. As for interpreting the error reports, I've no idea really. Some information is useful (Exception code, some memory addresses), but most isn't that helpful. ISTR seeing an article somewhere on how to use these crash reports though.
Yeah, I think a log file would be a little more elegant... woops

I've looked around here, msdn, and google for how to find what code is being executed for that address. I didn't find anything. I'm using Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Express. Does anyone know how to do this?

Nonetheless, I would wager that this particular block could be causing a problem due to out-of-date video card drivers. After all, these calls deal with the rendering pipeline aboard the card.

If this is the problem, is it even possible to change my code to avoid the problem? Once again, I can't update things on the target computers.
