Resizing the texture in memory

The extremely common GMA9xx also doesn't support more than 512x512 . And anyway produces horrible glitches at random. And crashes your app or many DX/GL tutorials randomly. On any Win32 drivers up to December 2008. (that's my experience).
In my benchmarks, a Radeon9550 (lowest ATi card you'd target) doesn't suffer any significant penalty from using rectangles.
