my terrain demo

Hello everyone, I have been working on a terrain engine/demo for the past 2 weeks. I have it pretty good right now (I think). I have worked on adding various things throughout the week, such as water with reflections, a sky , a particle engine, and such, but I''m redoing all of that right now, to make the demo look more polished. I am posting, just to see what you guy''s think of my lil demo, and what I should do with it, and add to it? So, please if you have the time can you look at the pics (below) and tell me what you think. Thanks alot, here are the pics and links to the pics. Thanks guys ...Also I''m getting kinda good fps right now 120 average on my pc, but I plan on further optimizing it.

i really like to see the screenshots, but there is no way to view them.

i tried to look at your screens with Opera. when i use opera to look at your screenshots, it don''t work. it seems that geocities does not allow to view their pages with opera !?

they look great ! especially the first one (http://www.geocities.com/tryforfulluse/brown_yellow.jpg). i really like the water. i don''t know if it is just an optical delusion, but it seems that the water gets reflected on the ground

i would like to see it in realtime. is there a demo, you can provide to download ?

yes .. i have an idea. but i might be a BIG project
maybe you are interested. i wanted to go for this thing, in about one month. until then i may have enough knowledge to acomplish this profect.

ok, here we go. i will tell you what is it all about.
maybe you know the RPG-Maker2K (go.to/rm2k) . It is, as you can see in the name, a Role Playing Game Maker. I think it is the most powerfull rpg maker, which is available. well, this toolkit is for those people who want do develop a rpg in the old s-nes style (320x240x256). this rpg-maker is NOT as old as the snes, it provides you with a powerfull palette of features. easy to handle, and a nice event system. so you do not really need to know a programming language. it''s like a scripting language you CAN use. you do not have to use it. you can make pretty cool games without any scripting.

there is the point: i want to develop a 3D RPG-maker in the style of the rpg-maker2k. the thing is: first of all i (or maybe we) have to find a solid idea of how should work everything. i thought we can include those people, who are making games with the rpg-maker2k, to give us some hints, ideas, what we can make better in the 3d-rpgmaker; what things we should take from rpg-maker2k and include it into our rpgmaker. well, i really know, that this project is gigantic ... this can take a lot of time. but i think it is also a very nice project, where you can increase your skills. maybe it will be finished, or not. if there is enough response from the community of the old rpg-maker, we would be enough enthusiastic to finish this project (MAYBE ).

ehm yes: this is a small peace of my idea of this project.
maybe you know the game "xenogears". if so, you would get a sample of what rpg-graphic-style i am speaking of. (i am not going to implement a rpg-maker which is in the FinalFantasy7-9 style. these have rendered backgrounds, but tell me, who would have enough time to construct such great backgrounds (for a free game). the landscape can be greatly used for overland scenes.) the fighting scenes should be like those, which can be seen in the ff7-ff9 titles.

finishing words:
the great difference between the rpg-maker2k and the 3D-RPGMaker would be, that graphic. the first is in 2D, the other would be in 3D. maybe you take a closer look at XENOGEARS, to find out, what style of rpg i thought of. the design paper is not finished yet and always open for other suggestions.
the last thing, what would make me enthusiastic to develop this toolkit, is: There is NO 3D-RPG Maker currently available and NOT in development (as i know).

Litte Taz: Eh, Im not to crazy about RPGS, but maybe a ZELDA style one, could be cool. I feel I could probably do it. I have read about tiling and such... I tried emailing you, but you dont exist ? Dire Wolf: I read that entire book, but I did not use any code from the terrain-heightmap thingy the author/s included. My terrain engine runs about 3 times faster than the authors currently, and I''d say it looks a helluva lot better The particle engine, heightmapping, texture generation, and everything else that I have encorporated into that demo, I have designed based off of articles from the Internet, and from my own knowledge && crazy mind.

i did not say, that you are going to develop a game, i ment to develop a rpg-toolkit. where other people can make rpg games. yeah, maybe in the style, zelda was done. it is a nice idea to this this way .

and of course, i would like to help in this project. but maybe it is "crazy" to this. because this project seems to be really big. i think such things should do commercial game-developers.

can you tell me about your next project. i am interested in it, please.

Hey, LittleTaz, I''d greatly like to work on some project with you, because you''re quite enthusiastic and you seem to be learning (so thats a good thing). I just added in awesome moving water, with waves and such. Please check out a pic here

Please check it out. The only problem with it is the texture doesnt look the best on it, not sure what to do about that though. I wouldnt mind working on some game-toolkit or something with you, just give me you''re address and we can talk. I plan on reading a bit about AI, and just further developing my skills, by reading 3D Games: Real Time Rendering & Soft. Tech. && I just picked up Code Complete.
