What makes a standout programmer?

I wish the average programmer I meet would read more papers, I know plenty of them that haven't read one since graduating college.

I don't think I would call John Carmack a genius, but only because I use that term very sparingly. And the term "rockstar programmer" is just plain ridiculous. But in any case, I believe his work speaks for itself.
