Hello all, and welcome to the Game Art section of GameDev.net I'm the new moderator, and I've noticed this topic is pretty dead! The artwork is 100% of what people notice when they first glance at a game, and though it may not be 100% of the game(at leat it shouldn't be!), it's what makes the impression, and encourages people to check out more about a game.
I've been working w/ game art for as long as I can remember (any old Basic programmers out there?), so I'd be happy to field any questions any of you may have, and I'll be sharing tips and tricks I've learned over the years in this forum, so check back often!

Hi, if you have any spare time while moderating this topic, do you know how to make a good tiling texture map from a photograph? This has puzzled me for ages, and all I can do is create really basic tiles. Thanks for any advice.

A few overlooked underrated tools that could come in handy:

ImageComposer (Microsoft) Awesome for manipulating and compositing images for pixel-type apps (As opposed to high-end photo realistic packages). The most important features are its simple support for layers and support for alpha blending.

Cosmigos ProMotion. The BEST DPaint clone for the PC... A perfect tool for 8-bit pixel drawing. (Wish they supported 24-bit tho')...

I've been thinking about the texture tutorial and I guess it should
include info on:
- Texture creation basics - Anything you can use on any graphic program -
- How to create textures that map correctly on your objects - I always
had problems doing this and I'm sure I'm not the only one -
- How to do face textures - I did once a pair of eyes but how to do mouths? -
maybe this is more a 3D issue than textures..
- The use of layers in texture creation - since most programs let you
make textures with layers but no one explain you how or what do they
do to the final image..-
- Tips/Hints

Well that's it so far.. other ideas? someone want to make it?

Ah, good to see that's all it took to get people talking again! Neils (Niles? Niels?) is right, www.freetextures.com is a good place to check out, and we all should give a big hand to Paladin Studios for putting it up.

As for making seamless textures - There are a few ways to do this. The easiest way would be offsetting the texture in Photoshop, putting the seams in the middle of the image, and then cloning for other parts of the image to make it seamless. Another way is "rolling" the image, that is, taking each quadrant and rotating it so each edge matches the opposing one. You get the same effect by offsetting, but some people prefer to do it manually. If anyone else has suggestions, I'm sure everyone would like to hear them.

Try this out. It's a pretty cool program. If that doesn't work for you, tell me, I know of loads of programs with texture creation.

Reptile seems to be more of a texture creation tool that a tool for making seamless textures. For the ULTIMATE it in texture CREATION, check out DarkTree textures at http://www.darksim.com. Procedural textures without the need to learn programming. If you own a number of programs, you can create the textures in the standalone program and use them as shaders in all shader categories - if you're using the standalone to generate textures for real-time, you can render to any number of formats and resolutions. I HIGHLY recommend this tool to ANYONE interested in creating realistic textures quickly. Also has full animation support for all parameters. There's nothing like this out there anywhere, and no, before you ask, I don't work from them.

Your technique of offsetting the image is great! I've made all kinds of seamless textures, even of things I never expected were possible - like ivy or pebbles. Thanks for your advice.
