years ago, i moved to firefox. i started to dive into extensions heavily, loved them. now, i moved over to chrome, as it has extensions, too, but is a much more clean codebase from the start. (case in point, installing an ext doesn't force you to restart the browser).

i do a lot of html5 css3 jquery stuff right now, so i'm quite happy with chrome (having firefox and firefox 4 beta to compare).

iexplore, i just check if one can actually read and use the page. for the rest, i don't care personally :)

Firefox. Adblock. Enough said.

And no, Chrome's Adblock does not compare.

by now it does, having the identical functionality. chrome allows now full interception of the dome while loading, preventing any ads from ever popping up.

Dave beat me to it. I think the OS-code on which Chrome is based got this change, so hey presto now Chrome can block ads.

I can't remember any forum used by IT folk/developers where a discussion on browsers didn't lead to people basing MS (oops, M$) in the first 2 replies. It's nice to see, is GD more Windows-biased than many other programming sites?

Opera I never used but fans (who tend to be of the real stereotyped arrogant-nerd type) say it is the most standard-compliant and fastest browser around. Are they just making it up?

Possibly, but Microsoft have been making a huge amount of progress with their later versions of IE and IE is actually a relatively decent browser these days. The developer tools are certainly excellent.

It depends how you measure the speed. I've always found Opera runs very nicely on even very ancient hardware, but it historically performed poorly in JavaScript/rendering speed benchmarks against other browsers (notably Chrome). Since 10.5 they've been jostling for top position with Chrome but there's very little real-world difference between them. IE 9 thrashes the competition in raw rendering speed thanks to its hardware accelerated features! Opera has always been very good with standards compliance, though due to its small market share some sites are not tested in it and do not work properly (most of the issues can be resolved by setting Opera to report itself as another browser, so the issue is with dodgy browser sniffing in the site code, not Opera itself).

Personally, I pick a browser for its user interface and built-in features over things like speed or standards compliance.

I use Chrome, it works very well on both my netbook and on my desktop and both under Windows and Linux.
In the past year I have read several times that the federal office for information security in Germany warned of the usage of IE and recommended using other browsers. So, no IE for me.
Sometimes I still use Firefox but it crashes every now and then. I found Chrome to be much more stable.
