Help Wanted topic approval

As a community, I think we are doing what we can to support newcomers as well as veterans. It is up to the post author to accept that help or not. As said before, it is our (kind of) responsibility to let the bad topics sink into oblivion and bump those that deserve a spotlight.

As a conclusion, the Report button should become a friend (maybe not a very close one, rather one you visit once in a while and have a meaningfull conversation with), cut the spam chat where it does not belong (such as the dreaded Feedback: Only positive or None) and give out advice in private otherwise.

Still, question. Let's say there is the Feedback: ANY marker, which opens a wide door for cenversations with the OP. Is there an unwritten limit as to how many times the topic can be bumped by a conversation such as "I've sent you mail", "I received your e-mail -- thanks" or 3 people in a row giving out the same opinion? I feel uneasy about having that restricted and policed (it WOULD allow the bad topics to sink and make greater usage of PM), and it stricktly speaking isn't bumping -- it does have some value... In a vauge way.

Stupid idea, but maybe posts should have a minimum word/character amount? That would allow people to rethink what they want to post, maybe provide greater insight or discourage writing stupid posts alltogether. Then again, people would just "Hm, I am under the impression that what you have said in your previous post on XX-XX-XX is okay, which means that I agree with it and have nothing further to add, as the subject seems acceptably described".
Disclaimer: Each my post is intended as an attempt of helping and/or brining some meaningfull insight to the topic at hand. Due to my nature, my good intentions will not always be plainly visible. I apologise in advance and assure I mean no harm and do not intend to insult anyone, unless stated otherwise

There are no real guidelines/limits, written or unwritten for these kinds of posts or for responses to a "feedback: any" topic, but I will step in if I feel that things are getting out of hand; judgements on this sort of thing are made on a case-by-case basis. If you feel that something like that is getting out of hand you're welcome to report the posts for moderation.

I would like to put a suggestion/comment forward:

1) Where does it say that post require verification because I couldn't find it anywhere? Which is a little frustrating when your post just doesn't show up! But not really a bother if you know.

2) I think that GDnet should remember it is just one of many forums, and actualy a very hostile one. I think it has one of the worst view/post ratios I have every seen (In all subforums). I would like to see some improvements but I have been visiting for quite a while and it is in general degrading in my opinion. As far as Help wanted goes, I think most visiters there are people who quite enjoy being confrontational about peoples ideas and asperations. Of course most projects end soon, but so what? I dont really like forums...

End of a brewing rant (Largely caused by ChaiScript! No-dependancies! Bah, until you download Boost (all 13123123GB of it!))
Hostile? Maybe a bit trigger happy with critique, but I think it's only natural if we are talking about a commitment. Everyone wants to play it safe and not go ballistic on a project that will sink the remainder of what little free time we have.

Let's be honest -- there is little to no foul language, the people show a very high level of personal culture... The admins are polite and fast to react... This is one of the better forums I have participated in. The fact that few post is maybe due to them not having anything to say -- silence is gold, as they say. Don't expect just about everyone to talk about everything -- it would be a total mess and more a chat room than a real forum, with time given for posters to react and think their decisions through.

Indeed, the verification information is not posted. I swear I read it somewhere -- or maybe just figured it out? Worth adding it to the post with the template.

Ok, Hostile is a bit unfare. I do think GDnet has gone a little down though, I liked it 3/4 years ago much more for some reason.

I redact some of my scathing comments!

1) Where does it say that post require verification because I couldn't find it anywhere? Which is a little frustrating when your post just doesn't show up! But not really a bother if you know.

When creating a new topic in Help Wanted there is an information bar displayed immediately above the post editor with a blue information icon and the text "This post will need approval from a moderator before this post is shown.".

I'm investigating the possibility of having the font size increased and a more dramatic background colour chosen to make that message stand out more.

Maybe have it shown after the post is commited? With a "it may take up to 72 hours for your post to receive approval" (or any other timeframe)?

I know this is anecdotal but I learned a lot from being a time-waster on Help Wanted. I'd think of a game idea whilst walking the dogs (some of them legitimately good) and immediately go home, hash out a quick outline and post a topic.

I know, I'm Victor and I'm an idiot and the court has ordered me to join Time-waster's Anon.

However I eventually learned that it was stupid wasting people's time like that and, as I grew older, I realised how much work it would take etc etc. So I made a new account and, hopefully, a fresh (and more successful start).

And music could be helpful earlier on- it's one of the easiest ways to build a mood and atmosphere to get everyone on the same peg. A storyboard/slideshow is much more effective with background music, just like a modern films (with music, talking and explosions are more engrossing than old sIlent ones.
