So you guys have probably noticed that the forum mergers are finally going on, and there are other changes coming down the space pipe in the near future.

Since General Programming has now absorbed a couple of other forums, we'll be seeing a lot more traffic (I presume) and a lot more subject matter variety. As such, I want to know what sorts of ideas you guys have for keeping things organized and flowing smoothly here. In particular, if there are any resources (FAQs, rules, links to articles, etc. etc.) that you want to see from the old Web or Java forums, let me know and I'll get them set up.

I'm also working with the rest of the mod team to make sure this integration goes as smoothly as we can make it, but in the meantime, if you have any thoughts at all on how we should be doing business here in General Programming, feel free to drop a post in this thread, or shoot me a PM if you prefer.

Thanks guys; hope you continue to find GP a helpful resource and a friendly community.

I haven't noticed anything, but maybe that is because I'm on the mobile version of the site? While I have your attention, the game dev logo on the mobile site takes me to the bottom of the current page, not the homepage.

I suggest we ban any talk of functional programming, and anything not related to .Net! We should also have a recommended patterns list... containing only the singleton pattern.
In time the project grows, the ignorance of its devs it shows, with many a convoluted function, it plunges into deep compunction, the price of failure is high, Washu's mirth is nigh.

Whenever I used to post in the Alternative Game Libraries, I'd prefix my posts with the technology used in brackets.

Examples:
[SDL] How do I enable alpha transparency?
[Allegro] Why is this code crashing?
[Qt] How do I get it working with Code::Blocks?

It'd be cool if GameDev could encourage the use of such things. Examples: [C++], [Python], [Lua]

If, when creating a post, there was a series of checkboxes that the user must select, that automatically prefixed such a bracket. It'd be nice if tags in brackets was maybe even bolded, or colored differently, to visually distinguish it, to help those looking to be helpful visually scan for threads that are tagged in APIs or Languages that they have experience in.
When checking a box, it just prefixes the text to the Thread Title line edit, so the poster can still manually edit it if desired.

You can even make the default tags change from subforum to subforum. For example, in the DirectX forum it might also include [DirectX] [SlimDX] [XNA]. In the Lounge, you might have [Politics]. In Help Wanted, you might have [Paid] [Unpaid] [Shared Profits] [Offered] [For hire]. In the Hardware subforum, you might have [Videocard] [Harddrive]. In Everything Unix, you might have [Debian] [Ubuntu] [Red hat] [Knoppix], etc...

Using a very simple system like that highlighted above, you can bring a great deal of benefit to every subforum, and easily customize it for each subforum, with very minimal work.

It would also be cool if these worked more as tags rather than prefixes to the thread title.

You must have missed Drew's journal post on the topic - tagging is coming, very soon.

Ban functional programming and .Net tags and force every post to have a singleton tag?

We are doing our best to shoot for a transition to 3.2 at the end of December, but we have a ton of work to do even still between now and then. Mainly we're setting up the platform to move forward, and our goal first and foremost is to make sharing information extremely easy.

With 3.2 we have topic prefixes that are actually part of the tags that you apply to a topic.. so you can tag it as ".net" or "java" and you can check a little box that tells the forum software to use the first tag you added as a prefix.

Also, I think we should convert the GP forum to a less generic MFC forum.

WHERE'S MAH BLACK THEME! Posted Image

Okay, but seriously. Add the extra work to get a proper black theme running (not the unofficial one), this high-contrast white BS is burning my eyes out; I'll give out cookies when it's done! For real! :)

Oh, and tagging times a million+.

Washu, though your plan in pure genius, there is a slight flaw. ....F#

I think tag is definitely +1. However, will the tags be hardcoded, on-the-fly-user-defined, or a combination? I would like a combination.

Last thing. Should this be a sticky? At least for a couple of months.

Can't see another place to comment on the new site's design, so I'll do it here.

For some reason the pages get cached as soon as they are loaded, so to get updated pages I need to go and manually remove the cache.
Not sure if it's your doing, or a proxy you are behind, or other things.

I am using Firefox 9, if it matters.
