Yes it is a good option. (One of the better options for indie developers really). You still need to make really good games and put some effort into marketing them if you want to make a living from it and becoming filthy rich is very difficult as always.

No idea to be honest, but if you know Java then you could just drop by http://developer.android.com and go from there, it isn't that difficult.

Making good applications that people want to use is a good option to make money.
Platform is secondary.

Android is a big platform, where its easy and cheap to self publish, so of course Android is a good idea to learn if you are interested in making good applications that people want to use :)

If you are asking: "Is android a viable market?" then the answer is "yes". If you are asking: "how do I make money from apps/games?" then the answer is "what does your business plan say?". If you don't have a business plan, you aren't ready to make serious money. :)

Lately the media has been panning Android as second fiddle to iOS, but don't listen to them for a second. I think Android will be king for making money in a couple of years. Every day better apps are being deployed to it, so make something now before the gold rush starts. It will only get harder to have your app noticed.

Well, I'm not really sure what the exact definition is. And probably it differs depending on who you ask.
We are a couple of guys (4-6) who make games for a living, and we are independent from any publisher and never take any external projects.
We do have an office and are a registered company though.

If you are familiar with another language or want to target multiple devices (Android, iOS, etc) then there are frameworks you could consider as well.

See:
RhoMobil - http://rhomobile.com/
AppCelerator - http://www.appcelerator.com/

There is also a free one that may be of some interest: http://xmlvm.org/overview/

I am not sure how good these are, but if you consider something then make sure it creates a native application and not a web based one. I believe the two I listed do.

I have not done much research of these. However, I too have recently started getting interested in mobile development and noticed these.

Best of luck

[EDIT]
I thought RhoMobile cost money if commercial, but that is not the case it seems:

Purchasing
Rhodes is free and open source under the MIT License. Most organizations building real production apps require some level of commercial grade support. For that we offer the Rhodes Enterprise License. Please contact sales for details.

It all depends on how much support you need. Of course their other products will cost money, but this is another free solution (from what I glanced over).
