There's background info on my architecture here --

I'm thinking about switching to UDP between my middle and front tiers. Currently I use TCP and no compression between the middle and front tiers. The front tier connects to the middle tier, issues one request, gets a reply and then exits. The amount of data transferred between the front and middle tiers is generally less than a 1,000 bytes in each direction. The middle and front tiers are generally both run on a LAN. I guess the trade off is between reliability and speed. A UDP based approach would be faster but not as reliable. Since it is a LAN am not sure how much reliability would suffer. What do you suggest? Tia.

Why are you considering this change? Have you noticed any actual problems, or is this just premature optimization?
