There's background info on my architecture here --

I'm thinking about switching to UDP between my middle and front tiers. Currently I use TCP and no compression between the middle and front tiers. The front tier connects to the middle tier, issues one request, gets a reply and then exits. The amount of data transferred between the front and middle tiers is generally less than a 1,000 bytes in each direction. The middle and front tiers are generally both run on a LAN. I guess the trade off is between reliability and speed. A UDP based approach would be faster but not as reliable. Since it is a LAN am not sure how much reliability would suffer. What do you suggest?
