Hi Guys,

We're currently working on a platform game for mobile phones and we're about to release it in a week or two.

Jake, the main character of the game, is fighting different types of robots (and many of them) in his attempt to liberate his home town from Hax0r's cruel regime.

I uploaded some Youtube videos that you can check out -

Intro Story -
Gameplay -

Basically, all is left now is to find a name for the game ;)
We thought of "Jake Please Help" and also "Jake Ace", but we don't like these too much...

Any ideas? If you'll manage to come up with a name that we'll use, you'll receive an honorable thank you in the credits screen :)

Thanks,
Guy

Who is Jake and why is he the protagonist and not some James Bond or Rambo?

In your description of the setting in the first video you concentrate too much on the villain and very little on both the hero and the world around the player. That's the reason you can't come up with a name. Even if you make a parody of other games' settings you have to give a logical (well at least according to the rules set in your world) reason why the hero is that guy and not somebody else.

So as an example, let's make Jake someone suitable to be the protagonist. How about a CIA agent? Then calling the game Agent Jake would be quite fitting. However, this game is a parody, so Jake doesn't have to be a real CIA agent. Let's say Jake was hired by the CIA because the CIA is short staffed and its toilets are overflowing.

Now not only do you have a name but also a part of the backstory, which can serve to further attract the potential player's attention.

Good pointers, I'll try to explain why we shaped our game to the way it is:

When we first begun to work on the game, Jake actually was a special forces / CIA agent, later on he became an Irish dude with a drinking problem (not suitale for kids) ;) But we finally decided to go with a very light version of the backstory so it'll not be too complicated and have most of the parts in it implied - there is a bad guy and there is a dude that becomes a hero. Also, there are a few games that focus on the bad guys - Killzone for example focuses on the Helgans as a design decision.

Jake is a cool dude from the town that has some hero traits and he is damn serious about saving his home town.

Cool, we liked Jake Lightning!
In general, we are looking for a name that emphasize Jake's persona / abilities / etc...

Except there's nothing in the game to emphasize Jake's persona or abilities. Well, unless you count jumping. Jumping Jake?

In that case the naming scheme might be analogous... Potty Menace?

Jumping Jake is somewhat similar to Jumping Jack, Jumpy Jake feels like the protagonist has a nervous breakdown :)
You could also call the game "Jake and the robotic army of evil" or something like that - makes it sound like the game makes fun of itself.

Jake - Home Town Hero
Jake and Hax0r's mechanical army of doom - Somewhat of an homage to the Edgar Rice Burrough's titles
Everything's Jake

I feel like there's a LOT of potential for puns here that we're just not exploring!

Jakin' the Hard Way!
Jake it Up
Jake It, Baby
Jakin' Names
Jake No Prisoners
Jake No Fake
HeartJake
This Jake is No Lie
etc.

Too bad it's not a dating sim, because Easy Jake Lovin' is RIGHT THERE.

...Actually, now I'm utterly convinced that Easy Jake Lovin' is a game that NEEDS to be made. Google says the name isn't even taken yet!

We also thought about
- Jake Ace
- Jake Mate

We really like "Jake No Prisoners", it's definitely one of our finalists!

Jake Brake
  • A two one(1) syllable word title is easy to remember!
  • Brake, hints to the amount of precision braking required to avoid falling in Spiked Pits...game over!
  • Brake, also rhymes with the word break, people play games on break (sometimes before). Its time for a Jake Brake!
  • Jake Brake is a braking mechanism installed on some turbo diesel engines. Compliments Jake's (soon to be added) Super Turbo POWer Up!
Good Luck!

I like that! Might I add that Jake brakes work by cutting off cylinders in a diesel engine, resulting in probably the loudest and sexiest sound of an engine on the highway, so might that be a parable for cutting off the enemy in the game, level by level? :)

Thanks, this one is great!

I've added a poll and it's working kind of well on Facebook.

For my titles and character names I always take all of the words you can associate with that character/game/object/etc. and then try to mix those in a way that you can easily visualize the subject matter of a game, but the title won't be an actual word. The best example I have seen in this is the region names in Blizzard's World of Warcraft. For example, one of the regions is called Westfall, except Westfall is not an actual word. But what comes to mind is exactly what the region is like (Western landmass, "falls" straight into the ocean, and it is somewhat barren). Another one is from Fable 3 and that is Brightwall Village. In the game, the village does not have any "bright walls." Instead, the buildings are timberframe and when rendered, produce reflectivity. This can evoke an association with the name. My final example also comes from World of Warcraft and may be the best. One of the regions is called Desolace. That is obviously not a word, but it is so similar to "desolate" that you subconciously associate the two. "Desolate" is probably the best way to describe Desolace. Desolace is an empty desolate place with white sand/rock ground, and a white seashore with the occasional green moss. The sky is somewhat murky also. Try to add in Latin and French and German words (as long as they contribute to the environment of the game and evoke a good association with the game environment). I know this may not have referenced a platformer, but this is a good thing to know.
