Does anyone have some experience in making web games in java?

I have idea for webgame, where you have website interface, where you can do all pre-game stuff, management and so on and actuall game will run in applet. It's not much of a game idea as idea for architecture(I guess). This seems to me as doable thing, but is it ideal? I have several quetions regarding performance, security, scalability. Which Java technology should I use? Or should I use something different than Java? For example php, flash or something else?

There are some alternatives of java for web games: flash with stage 3d for client, html 5. Java EE is best choice for soclet game server.
BUT! Java developing to enterprise edition since Oracle's purchaising Sun.
