Altitude 0 - plane racing at height 0

Altitude0 (A0) is an arcadish plane racing game in development for Windows PC, flying close to the ground between gates as fast as you can. It can be quite challenging to avoid trees while flying just above forests. So it’s important that you think and feel like an air race pilot, maneuvering your plane swiftly in the air, rolling and spinning to avoid obstacles.

A0 is going to be an online game with hopefully many people racing against each other.
Currently we are in the process of creating the first public demo.

If you want to see how it’s progressing, you can check out my blog at http://www.altitude0.com
Also see more screenshots and videos at http://www.facebook.com/altitude0

Tech specs: home grown engine that requires DirectX11 or DirectX9, and decent graphics card
As you can imagine, rendering a big terrain with a lot of vegetation and shadows for an extra spice will require a hard working graphics card.

Cheers,
DareM

It looks great, and pretty exciting to fly/race like that.

I have a couple of niggles though! It looks like the rudder is being used to represent the control used to roll the aircraft, but in reality (haha yes I know!) it's used to yaw, not roll. This is likely to jump out as being a bit odd to anyone who's flown aircraft (or model aircraft), especially as it's a huge rudder deflection. Maybe it's worth toning that down and emphasising aileron movement more?

The other thing is... aircraft have high wings because it gives them built in stability, and it makes me think of people bumbling around enjoying the view rather than racing. Highly aerobatic aircraft will tend to have low wings that are approximately level with the centre of mass.

It does look nice though!

@MrRowl: Good point about the plane physics, I am surprised you noticed the rudder movement.

Although it is supposed to be an arcadish plane racing but actually rudder in this demo is just auto controlled by ailerons (wing angle). Therefore when you press left, ailerons are moved and rudder just automatically follows. We will also support separate rudder controls for advanced players.
Also rudder is currently visually deflected more than for internal physics just to be more eye pleasing.

And about wing position, again I have to agree, people who understand planes will know there is no way Cessna can perform acrobatics it can in this game. I guess we will add low wing aircrafts for even more fun later on.

It's meant to be an arcadish flying game so I hope players will forgive us for the skewed reality in the name of fun.

I'm an engineer (yes, really I am :) ). I always think about the physics and find the nonsense things on other racing games (like Racedriver: GRID, NFS series etc.) but I don't care about the physics on this game; because it looks very entertaining :)

Keep up the great work man!

Cheers!
There's no "hard", and "the impossible" takes just a little time.

This looks really cool!

I wonder if you've thought about making the rolling of the planes look a little less rigid, perhaps by having the visual roll follow the physical roll, with visual deceleration/compensation at the points where the player releases the roll keys/joystick?

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions.

@edd²: I guess plane still looks a bit too rigid when rolling. We were greatly inspired by how Red Bull planes handle - fast and very responsive, although plane in this demo is bigger and should therefore be a bit heavier and slower.
I guess we need to tune weight & plane inertia to make yaw/pitch/roll look a bit more natural.

Looks cool on screenshots, but movements in video are somewhate "mechanic". It looks as if you can turn the plane only in 10 degrees increments with no intermediate steps. No smooth turning when turning in any direction. Is that something related to video capture or is the gameplay like that too?

Don't get me wrong, it's very polished and reminds me of Red Bull air race, except this rough camera / plane movements. You should definitely contact Red Bull, maybe they'll sponsor your project :)
