Is using nes/snes sprites legal?

Is using sprites from classis games of nes and snes in our games legal. A lot of site such as http://spriters-resource.com/ provides game sprites.

This depends on jurisdiction, but in general, no it's not. It would be copyright infringement.

If you use them in a game that you resell then yes it is very illegal, but if you own the game then you can use them for your own personal use. You can not represent them as your own basically.
