My reputation has gone from +6 to -4, to +4, and back down to -2, and I've only been a member for a couple of weeks.

Is this normal, or am I loathed by some very sensitive people?

This post here got me -2, what the hell did I do to upset someone, lol?

Things vary alot. It takes a few months for things to settle. Ratings are a great indicator of how much someone is helpful to the community as a whole, and if you've only been here a few weeks, you haven't yet had much a chance to assist others with their code problems.

Some people (usually newer users or less-active users) are too lazy or too busy to contribute to conversations, so they just rate instead as a way of expressing their opinions. Some lurkers agree with you and rate you up, other lurkers disagree and rate you down... but the people actually contributing to the conversation often forget to rate posts themselves, being too busy actually discussing things. Posted Image And when they do rate others up, they often rate up the people they disagree with, to say, "I disagree with your opinion, but I respect how civilized you are behaving in this debate." Or else they just rate people that help others.

But eh, you'll adjust to the culture here very rapidly. As long as you are polite, helpful, and spell-check/proofread/grammar-check/punctuate/capitalize* your posts properly, we're as friendly a bunch of individuals as you'll find online.

*We're not grammar nazis, but we do frown on people who spend 20 seconds slapping together a post and then expect hundreds of people to read it and spend five minutes deciphering it. If one doesn't take the 60 seconds needed to review what they wrote or if it has more than the occasional typo, why should we invest 20 or 30 minutes (or more! Sometimes hours) of our time understanding and solving and explaining their problem to them?
