So I made my first game in unity, and I want to send it to my friends to play. However when I tried to email it too them I can't send it because it is and exe file. Is there any other way I can get my friend to try out my game?

Put it in a compressed archive. That shouldn't be stripped. Bare .exes, for a variety of reasons, are rightly regarded as too probably a virus.

For example, MyNewSwimmingPool.jpg is unlikely to raise alarms. However, if file extensions are hidden, it could really be MyNewSwimmingPool.jpg.exe - An older black-hat hack.

You should also include any game assets the game will load, that aren't embedded resources (ie., that aren't placed into the executable when it's built).

Hi, RoyalRyan.

Like everything on a computer, data is stored in files within folders, etc.

All data can be compressed in to a zipped file format, and there are many sites readily available to host content for free.

Place your data on a website such as many of the following:

http://www.filedropper.com/

http://www.4shared.com/

http://www.yourfilelink.com/

From there on, retrieve the link's address to the appropriate download page with your data to friends, etc., and voila!

They can unzip and play(compressed zip file formats are highly recommended for placing content online).

Alternative, put in on a disc and hand the disc to them. You can even use Autorun.inf to make the game start when the disc is inserted.

If you are running your game after you compressed it, you will have to uncompress everything to be able to load the resources.

@RoyalRyan

You're welcome!

And I downloaded a copy of your game - enjoyed it.

Keep up that kind of work and you'll be calling yourself pro one day!

PS: Just make sure you extract all the relevant directories and .exe in to one specific folder or else the game won't execute with the missing .dll files and such.

@Servant of the Lord

That specific idea may not be relevant or convenient if Ryan isn't able to physically get the drive which the data is stored on to others. Also, placing it online and advertising the link to download it can attract many more players worldwide at any time than by physical drive transferring means to just friends. I'd always recommend placing your downloadable files on free-hosting web sites. It's a free and convenient way to share data to the world.

@Dragonsoulj

Compressed files are as easy as the click of a button to uncompressed. I uncompressed Ryan's game within three seconds(running Windows 7 Pro, 2GB RAM).

Completely agree! I was just offering a completely solid alternative that's guaranteed to work, and has been used for ages. Posted Image
The OP may not want his game to be publicly distributed yet, so sharing with the world is not always a desired thing (Just ask Valve about how much they loved Halflife 2's source code being shared with the world... before the game was officially released). But I fully understand and fully agree with your point.

[Edit:] I removed the rest of the post after a night's sleep, because it derails an otherwise sane thread, and the proper response should've been a private message to discuss with the user and a moderator; not a public finger-pointing. My mistake!

another thing that works is to manually change the extension to something else (like .txt) and send it over the email. Tell your friends to change the extension back from .txt to .exe. There is no data loss and is quick.

To add on to musafir2007's comment about extensions, renaming it to something obscure or longer than, say, 4 characters will make it show regardless of file explorer settings. If Windows doesn't recognize it, it will display it. If it does, it usually hides it unless someone marked that they wanted to see known file extensions.
