If you''re using OpenGL, they are there for you. Not sure about DirectX though. I would imagine it''s the same for that API.

The Documentation of the Free Raytracer POV-Ray has a good section on ''iso-surfaces'' thus surfaces described by equations.
You should have a look at this. I found it very useful.
current version is 3.5 Beta 4
version 3.1 does not include the isosurface-feature in this form.
