Creating Fire and Explosion in DirectX,

I am not sure about the best way to create particle engine to make it realistic.
For the fire, should I create a single particle in 3Ds Max and apply a texture then use it in the Particle Engine to duplicate it many times and apply alpha blending in DirectX or do everything in DirectX/C++ without using 3Ds Max?
