Hi folks, I'm working on a game that involves the use of glitches and bugs as a fundamental gameplay element. I would really like to hear the glitches and bugs you remember experiencing. Whether they stand out for being completely game breaking, or just downright hilarious! The main time frame I'm looking at is the 8-bit,16-bit and before eras of gaming, as I am using pixel art and 8-bit music, but would be happy to hear about good ones from later eras too. In particular, any platformer glitches.

So far I have thought about:
-Kill screens (not really a bug as it was a way to end arcade games, but caused some funky behaviour)
-Player sliding through walls and enemies
-Full screen graphical glitches that distort the player's view
-Erratic controls for a short time

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your help.

Hi! You should watch AVGN starting from the oldest chapter. This is a chapter dedicated to them:

A Mystical Land is a proof of concept of what you are planning (although unintentional?). Walking through walls and getting bosses stuck used to be the major gameplay element for years (among many, many other exploits), and still is very commonplace for defeating zone bosses. It seems like the game owners don't really care either. I'm not aware of any bans happening, even among the biggest offenders who not only use the exploits, but also very openly talk about it.

Look out for a character called "lovered" on the UK server in UK evening times, if you're interested in someone taking you on a guided glitch tour. That person is exploit-skilled and always interested in taking out newbies on a spree.

Another resource you might want to check out is Flying Omelette; they have an enormous catalog of glitches from the NES and SNES eras available here.

Cheers folks, all great stuff. Flying Omelette is exactly what I've been looking for, thanks Paul. If anybody is interested in the progress of the game, you can check it out here: http://katanalevygames.weebly.com/glitch---wip.html
