Starting in Source or Unreal?

Hello everyone.

I want to start creating some small mods. I have always loved Source, but I know UEngine it's awesome too.

Ok this is what I want to do and I hope you guys can guide me to the one that best accomplishes it:

- After having a 3D scenario (I can do it and export it from 3ds max right?) I want to have like a camera motion: have you seen some left 4 dead 2 levels (like the Stream level) where the camera comes from an X place to where the main characters are? Is it possible to do this many times? For example, if I press a button the camera moves to X place; while in X place, if I press another button, move to Y and so on.

- I want to create a very small leve like the ones seen in Portal 1, where a character just can move inside rooms, with Source Engine can I have some of this assets for my use?

I'm totally new to all the engines thing, but I'm willing to learn !! So a little guide will help.

And one more thing, is it possible to connect an xbox controller and move the camera (as I pointed in the first "-") or the character?

Thanks so much guys, keep having a wonderful week !!

Sorry guys if my Qs were confusing.

I'm going to try using Source first, So what apps do I need to download to start using it? I hear something like Hammer, what is it?

Thanks guys !!
Do you own a source engine game on steam?

If so then open your steam library. Next to the search button theres a little white bit of text that says "All games", click the arrow next to it and in the dropdown click on tools. Look for source SDK and there are 3 options. I believe you need to install "Source SDK" as a minimum, The other 2 rely on its presense. Recommended is to install all 3.

If you don't own a valve made source game on steam I don't think your allowed to use the Source SDK.

Source Engine can I have some of this assets for my use?

No, they are copyrighted materials. You can make your own rooms in the hammer level editor.

I can do it and export it from 3ds max right?

Source and UDK both use their own level editors.

To be honest you seem to be a total newb. Starting in 3d with no programming or game experience is the worst choice you could ever make. Both source and UDK are professional tools aswell and not aimed at beginners.

Hey thanks so much for your response. Indeed I have L4D2 right now, and I already downloaded the Hammer and all the apps needed to make my own mods.

Hey, thanks too for your response.

Yes I'm actually a total noob. I'm a good programmer (have a BS in CS) and I have some very small games on the net, but I want to make some mods for myself. I used for many years 3ds max so that's why my question. But I found Hammer very similar.

I'm already making my first things. I found that Valve has a great dev forums over there; even tho I will be around.

Thanks guys !!
