What does it mean to "be creative"? And how does one "be creative"?

Like the title:
  • What does it mean to "be creative"?
  • How does one "be creative"?
When you're creating a game, people tend to say you need to be creative about a concept, and then work more out of that.
  • Does it mean, that thinking of something outside of what the rest of the group were thinking of, is not "being creative"?
For the last question:

Recently, I've been ousted for not thinking "creatively". 4 of us were at a meeting together. 3 people had all agreed upon a single concept in mind, and I was an outcast. I was thinking of another concept that wasn't what they were thinking. I was tasked to lay out the bare bones of the concept, and I went with it, without even realizing that I was thinking of something other than what they were thinking of, and nobody told me about it until just then. We were all nodding and saying "yep", "this one", "right", etc., so I probably misunderstood something in between.

as long as it is in the context.

I like to think of creativity as thinking without boundaries. John Cleese did a good talk about the topic that you might consider checking out:

That said, in regard to your meeting, it sounds like the other 3 were on the same page about the idea, but it wasn't really your thing? I wouldn't call that a "lack of creativity", it's more a "lack of passion for the idea". One of the others probably should have done the idea development and it sounds like a cop out to say you're not creative and then kick you out to be honest.

This is a communication problem not a creativity problem.

What does it mean to "be creative"?


It means to come up with new (appearing) and interesting (appearing) ideas/styles/designs that are actually interesting and cool.

How does one "be creative"?


Same way as everything else; practice. Creativity though tends to involve a bit more natural talent for it than some other things. I'm not particularly creative myself, so it's hard to give advice there.

Exactly. Just because somebody told you you're not creative does not mean you are actually not creative.
This whole thread is based on your trying to figure out what's wrong with your understanding of creativity.
There's nothing wrong with your understanding of creativity.
The problem is that somebody insulted you, and you're simply hurt by it.

Dealing with these types of people is just part of being adult and professional. In the workplace, you rarely get much say in which people you will be working with.

The experience you had is a great learning opportunity, so I hope that you can soak the good advice in this thread.

At times in my life (I am 46 years old), similar issues happened. By contrast, a group of people whom are my friends and associates (professionals) are in agreement about some things: Maturity of the group which wants to work with me is crucial. The more mature people are, then the better we can work together, in general - that simple.

It is no loss to you that they rejected you because they obviously were hasty. They put you in a better position to find more mature partners than them, to their loss. They needed you more than you needed them, trust me.

Every successful person gets plenty of rejection: Steve Jobs, Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein....Many more! A massive and endless list of highly successful people got rejected plenty of times and every one of them was highly creative!

Continue to look at these issues surrounding this as opportunity.Posted Image

Research is the intellectual backbone of game development and the first order. Version Control is crucial for full management of applications and software.  The better the workflow pipeline, then the greater the potential output for a quality game.  Completing projects is the last but finest order.
