do you know how to program? if so what language?
what are you aiming to accomplish? if its your first game then you want pong or snake or something.
Tip: Only make threads that have a valid question to something specific you wish to discuss
What is your goal? Do you want to write games, or have you aspirations to specialise in programming, art, sound?
First, ask yourself this question:

Which one of these fields do you want to work in:

  • Programming
  • Art
  • Music
  • Writing
  • Q&A
  • Production
  • Design
  • Other

So you want to be a designer?
Want to review your favorite game?
So you want to be a producer?
I want to be a games-tester!
So you want to be a developer? (Part 2)
I want to program!

I'm not going to bite your head off, so I will instead point you in a good direction...

1) Concentrate on learning your language of choice. I recommend either C or Java.

2) Take courses in Software development and Maths.

3) Grab a book on games programming such as Andre Lamothe's "Tricks of the Game programming Gurus".

4) Be prepared to spend a year or two nailing the basics of programming and writing applications.

...and may the Force be with you...always. ^_^

My advice start reading a book about programming or how to make games. Thats always a great start. When your done with it buy another and keep on learning more. And like this, you shall evolve your skills.
Advice number one, there is a massive difference between succinct (good!) and lazy (bad!). People dont generally go far out of their way to help people that seem to be lazy.

Advice number two, read me. If it seems like too much effort, let me be blunt and say, quit now. This is one of those fields that requires a hell of a lot of effort and self motivation.
